After 25 years at the helm Richard Muller, the boss at Gloucester-based Prima Dental, the world’s leading manufacturer of carbide burs for the dental profession, is moving into a new role as executive chairman.
His role as Managing Director will be taken by Alun Jones, the company’s long-standing financial director.
Under Richard’s stewardship, Prima Dental has grown from a relatively small business to a multi-Queen’s Award-winning company. It employs around 255 people across all its global sites.
Prima Dental is now the largest designer and manufacturer of dental burs in the world. A dental bur is the tiny drill piece in a dentist’s handpiece. It can be made of steel, tungsten carbide and diamond grit. The higher quality the bur, the better job a dentist can achieve.
Headquartered in Quedgeley, the company has a workforce of around 240, a turnover in excess of £20 million and makes more than 25 million burs a year, exporting to around 90 countries.
Alun and Richard have worked closely together for many years and it was their close collaboration that delivered the successful business Prima Dental now enjoys in Brazil, China, Hong Kong and India.
Richard said: “The opportunity to grow the business with the support of energetic and enthusiastic owners has been a fantastic and unique opportunity that I have thoroughly enjoyed. With a great workforce we have achieved consistent success on a world stage of which the whole Prima deal are very proud.”
Incoming managing director, Alun Jones, added: “I’m honoured and delighted to be taking over the leadership of such a strong and well respected business. During the last eight years, I have enjoyed being part of the team that has delivered significant growth under Richard’s direction.
“The business has huge potential and I am confident that with the continued support of all involved in business, we will continue to grow and achieve even greater success over the coming years.”
