Worcester rural broadband provider, Airband, is celebrating a strong start to the year following a flurry of investment announcements and contract wins.
At the end of November 2020, Airband announced that Aberdeen Standard Investments (ASI) had acquired a majority stake in the company. With the support and expertise of ASI, Airband is now perfectly primed to scale up operations across the UK. The investment will be used to expand the Airband team to deliver connectivity to the towns and villages that need it most.
The company also recently announced that it has won two significant contracts to provide its ultra-fast, FTTP broadband to homes and businesses across rural and hard to reach areas in Cheshire, Somerset and Devon. The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) contract is one of the largest and most high-profile broadband builds in the UK today.
The contracts, worth a combined total of more than £30 million, will see Airband rolling out connectivity to more than 44,000 properties. Airband broadband will deliver download speeds of up to 1Gbps (Gigabits per second), putting it significantly above the national average of 64Mbps (Megabits per second).
The benefits of this cannot be underestimated. For individuals living in isolated, rural areas, a fast and reliable internet connection can prove a lifeline when it comes to accessing services and amenities. For businesses and communities, it provides unparalleled opportunities for growth and increased productivity.
Following the success of recent months, Airband is set to expand its team in 2021, creating over 1,000 job opportunities, with training, in Worcestershire, the South West and beyond. At a time when the national job market remains uncertain, this will come as welcome news for many.
Redmond Peel, Founder and Managing Director of Airband, said: “This has been an incredibly busy and exciting few months for the Airband team. From its very inception, the Airband mission has been to provide high-quality, affordable broadband to those that need it the most. In today’s world, where broadband is relied on more than ever before, this mission has never been more critical. We are proud to deliver life-changing services to those who have, until now, found themselves to be on the wrong side of the digital divide”.
