Somerford drives skills for business growth

As a provider and advisor on innovative technologies, information security company Somerford has a particular interest in ensuring its staff are qualified to provide the high-level support its clients expect.

Its sales and technical staff are certified in all of the technologies it represents and ithe company considers ongoing skills development a key element for business growth.

The company has taken on apprentices since 2014 and currently has three in marketing, a mature apprentice in finance, one in sales and five on its technical and services desk.

Head of marketing, Penny Harrison, explains how in-work training is benefitting Somerford.

“In marketing, we had one apprentice who did day release for 18 months. The college changed its courses to become in-work. It wasn’t an option, this is how the college now runs this marketing course and we find it’s very effective. The tutor is supportive and she provides weekly webinars which she records whilst going through the work required. The apprentices can refer back to these webinars.

“A lot of what our apprentices do at work can be covered in their coursework using evidence they’ve assembled themselves. We feel this is of great value to our apprentices and they seem to appreciate the one to one time they get with their tutor too.”
