Oxford appoints councillors to champion small business & armed forces veterans

Oxford City Council has announced new councillor Champions for Small Business, and Armed Forces and Veterans.

Councillor Chewe Munkonge has become Small Business Champion and Councillor Rae Humberstone, Armed Forces and Veterans Champion

Alongside their duties as local councillors, the two Champions will engage with members of the small business, armed forces and veterans communities to provide the City Council’s leadership with knowledge and advice in the areas.

The aim is to ensure that the needs and interests of the communities are taken into account throughout the City Council’s decision-making process.

The new Small Business Champion will oversee the development and implementation of the City Council’s SME (small and medium-sized enterprises) action plan, which aims to ensure that 38% of the City Council’s procurement spend is available to SMEs by 2021, and more than 40% by 2023.

There is a large military community in Oxfordshire, including bases in Abingdon, Benson and Brize Norton. In 2015, there were more than 8,500 military personnel and almost 5,000 military family members living and working across the county.
