A new virtual centre set up by a leading college group is encouraging employees to bridge their skills gap and employers to future-proof their workforce.

WCG, in collaboration with the European Social Fund, has set up the Centre for Culture & Tourism Skills in response to training needs in the Coventry and Warwickshire area. The centre provides short, professional courses for employees working in the culture or tourism sectors.

Employees must already work within the relevant sectors and live or work in the local region, however the training is available to companies of any size, as well as those who are self-employed.

Eligible employees can take advantage of courses in any disciplines relevant to their role, from Effective Public Speaking, to Intro to Bookkeeping, to Languages for Beginners and many more. Training will be delivered in a range of ways, either at one of the four WCG college sites in Warwickshire, online or at external offices.

Many of the courses offered through the centre were already available at WCG, but thanks to funding from the European Social Fund, the college group is able to offer this training at no cost to the employer or the employee.

According to VisitBritain, tourism has one of the highest skills gaps in any UK sector, yet Shakespeare’s England argue that it’s one of the key drivers of economic growth to the South Warwickshire economy and surrounding areas. Now is the perfect time for employees and employers to take advantage as well, what with Coventry becoming UK City of Culture in 2021.

Ryan Smith, who is leading on the Centre for Culture & Tourism Skills for WCG, said, “It’s an exciting time for culture and tourism in the region, but there is still a significant skills gap in the sector and we hope this training provision can help to bridge that.

“The training can be tailored to employers and specifically targeted at businesses in the two sectors. Employers or employees can contact us immediately in order to organise training sessions for 2020.”
