Bertie Matthews, sixth generation of his family to run the flour mill at Shipton under Wychwood is running two campaigns to reward bakers, with a prize draw of £150 for nominating a local restaurant or pub which has great bread, and a free bag of flour for the first twenty people who promise to bake for the MacMillan World’s Biggest Coffee morning in September.
Nicknamed the ‘Oscars for Bread’ the Tiptree World Bread Awards take place every September in London. Bertie has signed up Matthews Cotswold Flour to sponsor a new category for ‘Best Restaurant or Gastro Pub bread’ because the quality of bread is now so excellent around the Cotswolds and he wants to encourage more:
“If you love the bread your local restaurant or pub serves, nominate them to enter the awards, as we want to celebrate all the heroes out there baking great bread every day.”
Everyone who nominates a restaurant or pub to enter the category sponsored by Matthews Cotswold Flour, ‘Best restaurant or gastro pub bread’, will be entered in to a prize draw, with one winner drawn from a hat scooping £150 for a meal out (bread included, obviously). To take part go to the Matthews website, or any of its social media channels, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
The second celebration of baking is for charity, where a free bag of Matthews Cotswold flour will be given to the first twenty people who promise to bake for the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on September 29th.
Bertie Matthews said: “Macmillan is a great charity and a cause we love to support. Plus, the coffee morning is a nice opportunity for people to see what a difference a premium quality flour can make to their bake, so do pop in to the office in Chippy and pick up a free bag.”
The first twenty customers who promise to bake for the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning will receive a free bag of flour but they need to pick it up from the office of Matthews’ agency called Twelve PR, in Chipping Norton which is located, conveniently enough, at 12 The High Street above WHSmith, rather than the mill in Shipton. Call Nicky on 01608 495014 before you call in to make your promise and check supplies.
