Glos College takes student work experience to a new level

Glos College Chelt

Business Breakfast, Thursday September 27, 7.30am, Gloucestershire College Cheltenham Campus.

Due to its strong reputation in Further Education and unrivalled links with local employers, Gloucestershire College has been selected to partake in a government initiative to take full time students’ work experience to a new level.

The Career Hub is a new extended work placement for local employers and selected Level 3 (A Level equivalent) students. Only 155 students out of 2,600 have been chosen by the College to undertake in this exclusive programme with some of the county’s top employers.

The work experience placement is directly linked to the student’s specific course, and can be job shadowing an existing employee, or a more hands on independent and practical approach, to be agreed between each employer and their student(s).

The Career Hub is more than the week or two of work placements students may have experienced at school; this initiative requires 45 days’ worth of work over an academic year, for one or two days a week, or in a longer consolidated block of time.

Gloucestershire College ensures the right student is partnered with a suitable company, and that their career interests are aligned with the business’s needs. Employment coaches from the college will also further support the student and employer out in the workplace.

Not only does this initiative provide valuable career and professional experience for  students to increase their job prospects, but it enables employers to trial potential apprentices with considerably lower recruitment costs.

Sue Steed, Vice Principal, Gloucestershire College states “We are delighted to have been selected to join this prestigious work placement initiative. The Career Hub provides our students with fantastic career experience matched to their course, and furthermore enables employers to trial and grow the talent for their future business. “

Local businesses are invited to learn more about this exciting new venture, by attending the Career Hub breakfast launch event on Thursday 27September with breakfast served at 7.30am. Venue:  Gloucestershire College’s Cheltenham Campus, Princess Elizabeth Way, Cheltenham GL51 7SJ.
