The design agency behind the Studio 19 project was London-based Modus.
Hosted virtually on the 11th of December, the awards were judged by an independent panel of more than 80 industry experts, the judging focuses on design, quality, service, innovation, originality and commitment to sustainability.
Miles Dunkley, CEO of SLG Brands, said: “As a creative-led beauty brand business, we had a very clear vision of what Studio 19 should be – an emphatic design statement with an effortless sense of cool. We shared that vision with Modus. They understood, built on the vision and made it happen.”

In November last year Modus also won an award for Oxford Science & Innovation’s 2,000 sq m open-plan hub, which was a space designed for start-ups to incubate, collaborate and innovate and described by judges as “Oxford’s latest and definitely funkiest workspace”.
Matthew Short, Director at Modus Workspace said: “Grassroots is the third project we have carried out for OSI, and is by far the most ambitious in it’s breadth and scope. We worked closely with the professional team at Keble College to establish the building parameters for the OSI spaces before the building had been constructed. This ensured we could have the flexibility to adapt the space in future as the needs of the incubators change and develop.
We took our design inspiration from the raw concrete finishes in the lower floors, maximising the light and making a virtue of the myriad of services running from the student accommodation above. The spaces combine acoustically secure rooms of varying sizes with generous communal areas and breakout spaces for more relaxed working and downtime. Attention to detail was key in ensuring the space feels both cosseting and expansive with architectural acoustic panels ensuring the base materials do not overwhelm the rooms.
We are extremely pleased – and very proud – with the end result and are very appreciative of the trust OSI put in us to conceive and develop such a groundbreaking and visually stunning environment in which Grassroots can flourish.”
Head of Bidwells Oxford office, Richard Todd, said: “I couldn’t be prouder to be part of this team. This project with Modus has been an amazing and satisfying achievement for everyone involved, and I do mean everyone. Our office has grown in size and stature in recent years and has really pulled together during the Covid crisis so we will all enjoy this one – just not all in the same room.”
