Fast growing fabrication business is the perfect job for Abingdon engineering apprentice

Abingdon Engineering Apprentice

Local Fabrication apprentice, Hasan Masood, is delighted to have secured a full-time position with LTi Metaltech, having highly impressed the Abingdon based precision welding and fabrication specialist, after completing his apprenticeship with them. 

Having enrolled through Abingdon College, Hasan’s apprenticeship with LTi Metaltech, has given him essential welding and fabrication skills, as well as a BTEC NVQ level 3 qualification. Given that the number of apprenticeships has fallen by 25% over the last two years, opportunities from firms such as LTi Metaltech, are highly coveted, particularly in engineering, which is currently experiencing an acute skills shortage. 

For Hasan, his new role is a culmination of a long-held passion first developed at school in using machinery to create new things. It is also given him the platform for a long and rewarding career, which is something he is only too aware of. 

“From the very first time I began learning about engineering at school, to the moment I first heard about this apprenticeship opportunity through the Engineering Trust, I’ve never looked back. I’ve really enjoyed my time at LTi. It’s been a fabulous learning opportunity, giving me all the hands-on experience and skills needed to be a fully-fledged fabricator. I feel extremely lucky to be given this opportunity and fully intend to progress as far as I can within the business.”  

LTi are ardent supporters of the apprenticeship model and developing people from within, which they see as essential to building the next generation of engineers. This is even more critical given the current skills shortage, where it is no longer safe to assume you can just buy in everything you need.

For LTi, who has an impressive blue-chip client base that includes Siemens and Tokamak Energy, it’s a successful model that has already seen them develop five apprentices within their business. Through their structured training programme every apprentice is equipped with essential knowledge, techniques and machinery skills. LTi also ensures that their apprentices spend time working in each of their departments, to make them as versatile, knowledgeable and valuable to the business as possible.

Having progressed through the apprenticeship route himself, before working his way up to Business Development Manager, LTi’s Gary Chamberlain, knows the value of having a comprehensive training programme. And he loves to see the development of talent in others. 

“It’s been great watching Hasan develop and grow into a skilled fabricator, with the confidence to take on new tasks with minimal supervision. He can now take an engineering drawing and understand exactly what equipment and techniques are needed to manufacture it. It’s the level of initiative and self-belief we aspire to for all our apprentices.”
