Evesham farmer takes asparagus troupe to London for charity – and asparagus awareness

Gus the Asparagus Man

An Evesham farmer who likes to dress as a giant asparagus spear headed to London at the weekend with a large round of asparagus.

Together with his friends the Asparafairy, and Jemima – the world’s only asparamancer who tells peoples’ fortunes with the spears – Gus the Asparagus Man presented the round to the charity, Dogs On The Street, who provide services for the companion animals belonging to the homeless.

The presentation was made in The Strand at the mobile vet centre to some of the dogs, their owners and charity members.

The presentation marked the middle of the British Asparagus Festival which runs for just two months in late spring and celebrates the Vale of Evesham asparagus that is said to be the best in the world.

The asparagus round will be auctioned off with the money raised going directly to the charity.

The motley crew made their way via GWR from Evesham to London Paddington before heading to Dogs On The Streets mobile veterinary unit on The Strand on Sunday.
