Young people with complex disabilities and learning difficulties will have greater independence thanks to a Gloucestershire company’s generous donation.

Cheltenham company Astor Bannerman donated 675 slings, worth £67,000, to National Star, a UK charity supporting young people with complex disabilities.

Verity Fisher, Physiotherapy Manager at National Star, said the donation would make a huge difference to young people’s lives.

“Seventy per cent of National Star’s learners and residents use wheelchairs and many need hoisting for all transfers so slings are absolutely vital,” said Miss Fisher.

“In a year where there have been many additional costs linked to the ongoing pandemic such a generous donation of vital equipment is even more valuable.

“Due to the pandemic we have to wash slings more frequently and we have to allocate slings to individuals to lower any risk of infection. Having an additional supply is incredibly helpful. We thank Astor Bannerman for their support and generosity.”

National Star provides education and care for young people from across the UK. Its main campus is at Ullenwood but it also provides long-term care in Cheltenham, Gloucester, Malvern and Hereford as well as education facilities in Wales and Hereford.

Astor Bannerman design and manufacture specialist bathing and care equipment ensuring forward thinking designs meet the needs of clients with complex needs.  National Star is fortunate to have such a pro-active company based close to its Ullenwood site.

“Astor Bannerman is delighted to make this sizeable sling donation to National Star and their network of therapists and care staff,” said Jane Fraser-Hook, Astor Bannerman Marketing Manager.

“In January, Astor Bannerman took over the OpeMed brand, one of the leading overhead track hoist companies, which gave us access to a surplus of slings.  We have an historic relationship with National Star, our neighbours, so couldn’t think of a better place to donate them to, supporting their fantastic organisation and work.

“As a dynamic and expanding company, we are always seeking ways to connect with our community.  We are continuously innovating off the back of understanding our customers and their needs, and we love to work closely with communities like National Star, to enable on-going feedback and insight.  We look forward to an on-going relationship with the team at the National Star College.”
