Cheltenham brand agency Mighty acquires Third Floor Design

Mighty and Third Floor Design

Mighty, the Cheltenham-based brand agency, has acquired rival Cheltenham agency Third Floor Design as part of its expansion plans.

The deal will see all of the Third Floor Design staff transition with the business, including long-serving creative director Gareth Brough, while the agency’s founder James Cowdale will leave with immediate effect to concentrate on &SONS, the thriving clothing business he jointly founded in 2016.

“It’s fantastic to finally be able to officially welcome Gareth and the rest of his team to Mighty,” said James Ashe, Mighty’s managing partner. “It’s no secret that we have been looking for an agency to buy for quite some time as part of our growth plans.

“While we had been speaking to several agencies, both locally and further afield, the fit wasn’t right in each instance. When we started the conversations with Third Floor Design, there was a clear synergy around the approach, skills, and ethos of both teams.

“From early in the process, both parties were quick to understand how strong each team’s current offering is and what could be achieved for the clients of both agencies by combining forces.”

Established in 2006, award-winning Third Floor Design develops, builds, and manages brands for companies across a variety of sectors including food and drink, retail, fintech, the public sector and VC-backed start-ups.

With an enviable portfolio of work, the Third Floor Design team has delivered projects for a host of Gloucestershire’s leading companies including Neptune Rum and Dunkertons Cider, as well as national and international clients in the shape of HPS, Superdry, $1 billion valued insurance company Zego and US-based exploration startup The Metals Company.

It also came up with the brand identity of Business & Innovation Magazine in 2017

Both companies will retain their own name, brand identity and client base but will draw upon each other’s specialisms and experience when there is a client need.

Gareth Brough said: “This is an exciting new chapter for the Third Floor team.

“More and more in recent times, we had talked about how we can better support our clients. Now with access to Mighty’s deep expertise in brand strategy, communications and digital, there will be multiple opportunities to collaborate for the good of Third Floor’s customer base.”

The purchase of Third Floor is the first of a number of planned investments by Mighty as it looks to grow its business through the addition of specialist businesses and experts.

“We are purchasing a business with a great team, a fantastic reputation and an enviable client base, and we have exciting growth plans for both teams,” concluded James.
