When it comes to making your business more sustainable, it can be difficult to know where to start. That’s why GFirst LEP, The Growth Hub, and the University of Gloucestershire are bringing together county leaders for a one-stop-shop event to learn more, start conversations and build relationships.
Every leader has a role to play in our journey to reach Net Zero.

To empower all leaders with the know-how, connections, and support to take positive steps forward, this event will bring together sustainability experts and SMEs from across Gloucestershire.
Guests will hear from the formidable panel of academic experts, environmental advisors, and passionate eco-entrepreneurs, with decades of combined experience, on the following:
- What makes a sustainable leader?
- Should leaders be doing more?
- Can sustainability future proof your business?
- How can you lead by example and drive cultural change?
- Where should leaders go when they need help or advice?
Chaired by Ruth Dooley, Chair of GFirst LEP and Partner at Hazlewoods LLP, the panel includes experts in B Corp accreditation, sustainable product design, and sustainable operations.

Time: Arrive from 4.30pm for networking and refreshments. The panel will commence at 5.00pm with presentations followed by a Q&A, finishing at 7:00pm.

Introducing the panellists:
Chair: Ruth Dooley
Ruth Dooley is a partner at Hazlewoods LLP and chair of GFirst LEP – Gloucestershire’s Local Enterprise Partnership. Passionate about sustainability and the role Gloucestershire can play in the fight against climate change, Ruth will be chairing the panel for this event.
Dr Jon Furley
In April 2020 Jon took the role of Sustainability Operations Manager at the University of Gloucestershire. Jon is responsible for improving sustainability practice and environmental management across the University and its core operations at all sites. In his role as the University’s carbon manager, Jon is driving emissions reductions and energy efficiency through the development and delivery of the Carbon Net Zero Strategy. Jon is also the Environmental Management System manager, responsible for maintaining ISO 14001: 2015 accreditation and ensuring effective policy and performance improvement in areas such as technology use, waste management, cross-campus travel, and biodiversity planning.
As the carbon lead, Jon is involved in a range of interactions and collaborations with organisations throughout the county and has a wealth of knowledge to share at our event.
Mark Young is a Product Design Engineer with 20 years of experience on projects large and small. He’s been championing sustainability and circular economy thinking at local manufacturers, the Gloucestershire Research & Innovation Programme and through his consultancy, Mark Young Design.
Mark will reflect on his experience of introducing ISO 14001 at AGD Systems and discuss how nature can be affected by the nature of your business.
Danielle is from Sustainablee where she helps SMEs, through consultancy and group programmes, create operating models which balance profit with purpose. Most often this is in the form of working towards B Corp accreditation. She passionately believes that the next generation deserves to enter a kinder, more diverse, and environmentally considerate working world. She is on a mission to make having a positive impact just business as usual.
Danielle will be covering what B Corp accreditation is, how and why the business landscape is changing towards favouring purpose-led companies, what balancing profit and purpose means, and finally, how can SME’s take action to be more socially and environmentally considerate.
Eoin’s 30+ year career path has taken him from engineering, through marketing to company director, with a depth of experience in business strategy, leadership, and corporate social responsibility. He’s an optimist and passionately believes that business has a positive role to play in promoting prosperity for all while protecting the planet. He helps businesses to approach sustainability as an opportunity to drive growth, fuel innovation, and ignite passion.
Eoin will talk about understanding the goals and values of the Ecopreneur, how to find out what stage of development the idea is currently at and how to outline a plan for the next steps.
Andrew McKenzie is a sustainable business leader and innovation champion, having supported businesses for 20 years in improving their resource efficiency, reducing their impact, and establishing market differentiators. Andrew was the in-house sustainability lead for a multi-award-winning SME and is now sharing his knowledge and experience with a wider audience.
As a Specialist Business Guide at The Growth Hub, Andrew provides expert consultancy to all SMEs in Gloucestershire to support them on their Net Zero journey
