Anne Veck’s got a head for success

Most Wanted & It List 2021 Awards, comm by Jenny Brooks

Anne Veck Oxford salon has been named winner of the Sustainability Hero category at a top event for the professional hairdressing industry, Most Wanted. Newly introduced for 2021, the Sustainability Hero trophy recognises a salon helping to change the way we live – for the better.

Presented by industry magazine Creative HEAD, Most Wanted showcases the most exciting, progressive and game-changing talents in UK and Irish hairdressing. These hair professionals are not only global creative influencers and wellness experts, they are also breathing life into local high streets and the wider economy with brilliant displays of commercial innovation.

Anne Veck Oxford is a model of how to run a business that’s both commercially successful and environmentally sustainable. By introducing a range of energy-saving and eco-friendly measures, owners Anne Veck and Keith Mellen have reduced CO2 emissions by 40% (theirs is the only salon to be certified CO2-neutral by Carbon Footprint) and, keen to get others on board, have created a sustainable salon toolkit, Salon Re:Source to help the industry join the Race to Zero, the UN’s commitment to zero carbon by 2030.

Over 50 independent judges deliberated over this year’s record-breaking number of entries, including journalists from leading publications, directors of photography and film, established entrepreneurs and, of course, renowned hair artists alongside the names behind the UK and Ireland’s most outstanding salon businesses. On the panels this year were the beauty director at Telegraph Group, Sonia Haria; the editor of 10 Magazine, Claudia Croft; Professor of Sustainable Business at the University of Southampton, Denise Baden; award-winning journalist and broadcaster, Dr Ateh Jewel; and pioneering hair professionals such as Nick Irwin, Errol Douglas MBE and Luke Hersheson.

The salon will also receive a prize from category sponsor Kao Corporation, publicity in Creative HEAD for the duration of their winning year and the opportunity to appear at Creative HEAD events.

Says Catherine Handcock, publisher, Creative HEAD: “Sustainability is more than a buzzword in hairdressing now – it’s a responsibility. Anne and Keith set brilliant examples both personally and professionally in the positive changes they’ve made to halt and reverse climate and biodiversity emergencies. They are deserving winners of this inaugural award.”

While Amanda Nottage, editor, Creative HEAD commented: “This duo has been awe-inspiringly proactive when it comes to sustainability efforts in this Oxford salon for years, and have created brilliantly practical help for other salons to follow suit. True Sustainability Heroes!”
